ATELIER MEJÍA/WÄLZ is an artist duo founded in 2022 by Camila Mejía and new media artist Erik Wälz. Working across new media, projection mapping, spatial installation, and soundscape, their practice combines artistic research with a scientific curiosity and a focus on biomorphic abstraction. Drawing on observations of natural systems, micro-environments, and urban ecologies in the context of the Anthropocene, they create immersive audiovisual environments that challenge perception and invite cross-sensory forms of storytelling. Rooted in biological processes and biomimetic principles, their works make hidden phenomena perceptible through light, moving image, and sound, while reflecting on ecological fragility and shifting perspective from an anthropocentric worldview toward more-than-human interdependence—where technology becomes a mediator for sensing coexistence.

Artist Statement
“Just as a microscopic lense, we want to reveil the hidden worlds that sourround us. By changing our definition of scale, we immerse ourselfs into these natural realms. We carefully listen, abstract and translate our dialogues with this worlds into audiovisual, sculptural and multi-sensoric experiences and installations. By using light, video, auditory elements, and artistic research together.
We focus on working with natural biological processes to raise interest in our immediate environment. The natural world reveals strategies that can make a significant contribution to solving the ecological and environmental problems of our time. We have conceived an experimental, audiovisual workflow that makes the hidden biological sensually perceivable. Through images of different microenvironments, our works often offer viewers a glimpse into the organic structures of different plants in site-specific environments. With the increasing impact of climate change, there is an urgent need to rethink our relationship with nature.
CAMILA MEJÍA (1989) is a Colombian light and media artist based in Germany and graduated from the University of the Arts Bremen. Her sculptural and light-based installations explore the intersection of nature, memory, and transformation, often working with organic materials such as roots, plant fibres, and living matter through processes of weaving, tending, and attentive listening to the rhythms in nature. She has developed her practice through international residencies and exchanges, alongside research contexts in Durban supported by DAAD and other scholarships. Over recent years, her work has been shown in exhibitions, screenings, and festivals across Germany and abroad—among them Planten un Lumen (Hamburg), Brixen Water Light Festival (Neustift), and the International Lighting Guerrilla Festival (Ljubljana, 2023; upcoming 2026)—and screened in venues such as Kunsthalle Bremen and City46 Bremen. Alongside her artistic practice, she contributes to performance and stage contexts through projection mapping and digital scenography, and has shared her research in artist talks and working groups, including a sustainability-focused mapping symposium in Lille and the Water Light HUB artist panel in Brixen.
ERIK WÄLZ (1997) is a German media artist, scenographer, and documentary filmmaker based Oldenburg, Germany. He studies Digital Media (BA) at the University of the Arts Bremen and develops interdisciplinary work across installation, performance, and scenographic contexts. Translating observed structures and rhythms of the natural world into data-driven image and sound compositions, he often works in dialogue with musicians, composers, and scientists. Over recent years, his works have been presented in festival and exhibition settings in Germany and abroad, including projection and media-installation contexts such as Lighting Guerrilla (Ljubljana), Planten un Lumen (Hamburg), and the WATERLIGHT Festival (Brixen/Neustift). In 2024 he received a Culture Moves Europe Individual Mobility Grant, in 2023 he won the music // interact prize with his work “Skrjabin: An audiovisual journey into Synesthesia”, and in the same year received the Hochschulpreis for the interdisciplinary project “Bunker Requiem”.
